San Jose flea marketplace
merits prioritizing

Re. “San Jose leaders fail to reach consensus on flea market’s upcoming,” Web site B1, June 24:

The San Jose Flea Industry is an financial powerhouse offering livelihoods and reasonably priced retail to hundreds of San Jose citizens. As a result of the prolonged scheduling process for BART, the metropolis of San Jose addressed the Flea Current market like blank area on the map, to be filled in without having prospect costs.

Here’s a thought experiment: Suppose BART’s terminus ended up Santana Row alternatively of the Flea Market. Would Town Corridor unconcernedly trade Santana Row for some housing, some parking and a new Safeway? It’s tricky to think about that trade. And the Flea Market serves much more persons than Santana Row.

It is not as well late for an additional look at the Flea Current market to be certain continuation for all the distributors.

Housing in close proximity to transit, parking near transit and access to grocery outlets are essential. So is the San Jose Flea Current market.

Adventurous spirit
is worth preserving

We are all acutely knowledgeable of the time, electrical power, and charge borne by the U.S. Coastline Guard to rescue errant sailors, kayakers, and ocean adventurers (“Bay Spot kayaker rescued by Coast Guard six times into Hawaii attempt,” June 7).

But I am not an offended taxpayer. I see it as a worthwhile expenditure to keep exploration and wanderlust alive and properly in this modern day, all-way too-electronic age.

This crimson-blooded urge to conquer the unfamiliar, drive human endurance, and discover what’s further than the horizon is a unique high quality of the American spirit. We want extra of this in today’s risk-averse culture, not fewer.

Bipartisanship gripes
from ideal ring hollow

Marc A. Thiessen’s column (“Big governing administration is a one particular-way ratchet, and Democrats know it,” Website page A7, June 24 ) is blatantly hypocritical and dishonest.

Why are so many Democrats hellbent on shunning bipartisanship? Maybe mainly because of the GOP’s no compromise pledge. Before at any time trying to do the job with President Barack Obama, then-Speaker John Boehner explained about the recently elected president’s agenda, “We’re heading to do anything … to get rid of it, end it, sluggish it down.” Mitch McConnell claimed, “The single most important factor we want to obtain is for President Obama to be a one particular-expression president.”

Bipartisanship? Each individual one Republican in the Residence voted no on President Obama’s crisis stimulus invoice, (rather frankly a cleanup from the mess the Republicans created of the overall economy) simply to stand towards bipartisanship.

Their no cooperation, no apologies, no nod to the bigger good, has been the Republican system due to the fact at minimum 2010, and Thiessen has the gall to say that Democrats are not becoming bipartisan? With Republicans’ no cooperation agenda, Democrats simply cannot potentially operate throughout the aisle.

Students’ totally free speech
traditionally questioned

In 2004, my daughter, then a senior at Lincoln Substantial School, posted on LiveJournal a non-threatening crucial commentary about faculty things to do, classmates, and academics. As a end result of her submit, she was taken off from the school’s theater manufacturing, banned from an sophisticated drama class and had to attend at least just one session of Saturday faculty. As her mom, I was heartbreakingly powerless to affect school officials. I could only inform her that the punitive way she was getting dealt with was not reasonable.

Currently, my daughter, who is married, meaningfully employed and a mom had this to say about SCOTUS’s current final decision (“Justices say cursing student is safeguarded,” Webpage A4, June 24). “At the conclusion of it all, lecturers and directors in my high school unrightfully bullied an opinionated teenage woman. For the initially time, and for the rest of my lifetime, not a shred of a question continues to be that the way I was treated was wrong.”

Justice is slow.

Professor contacting out
elitism is pure hypocrisy

It is always amusing to see columnist Victor Davis Hanson, a senior fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Establishment, kvetch about “elites,” as he did in his June 25 column (“‘Wokeism’ is distracting us from experiencing authentic problems,” Page A7) and does in practically all his columns.

With all due respect, Mr. Hanson, you are as elite as it receives.

3-stage plan
to help save voting legal rights

Voter suppression likely on in most states, together with California, is terrifying. The inspiration is to keep individuals of color, the elderly and college students from voting. These groups vote Democrat a lot more than Republican. The condition of Georgia, for case in point, is eradicating additional than 100,000 voters from its voter rolls.
