An apartment blaze Thursday afternoon in northwest Houston displaced dozens of people, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 5800 block of North Houston Rosslyn. HFD spokesperson Abby Cortez said in a briefing that the department responded around 2:44 p.m. of smoke in the laundry room and units responded.

The fire was contained to two units and about 24 units were damaged, HFD spokesperson Abby Cortez said in a briefing.

A firefighter sustained a shoulder injury and was sent to the medical center, Cortez said. No residents were injured, but one resident reported a puppy didn’t make it out, according to Cortez.

The Red Cross responded to assist displaced families, Cortez said, and arson responded to investigate the fire’s cause.

At the time of a media briefing, Cortez said there were reports of 24 adults and 19 children displaced — a count that was growing as residents were starting to come home and learn of the damage.
